ABOUT US
The Lebone Centre is an NGO (registered as the ICDP Trust) which was established in 2005 to serve the marginalised communities of Ghost Town, Hooggenoeg, Vergenoeg, Sun City and Scott’s Farm in Makhanda (Grahamstown), who are burdened by high unemployment, poverty and all the concomitant socio-economic ills.
Originated by Kingswood College, the Lebone Centre now operates as an independent entity providing educational support to families and children aged 0 – 9 years, through an innovative pipeline of programmes that range from the First 1000 days to Grade 3 learners.
Our aim is that learners entering the Intermediate Phase of schooling should be at their appropriate level of development, and confidently reading for meaning.
We have built strong relationships in the communities that we work in, and believe in a stakeholder approach that sees us partnering with PARENTS, CAREGIVERS, TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS in order to support young children’s development.
The Centre has a strong and committed Board of Trustees, chaired by a local palliative care doctor and a range of other professionals. Our staff hail mostly from the local community, and we pride ourselves on excellent teamwork.

The approach is a holistic one that aims to work with families and all the aspects of a child’s life (social, emotional, physical and intellectual), as well as interacting with children along the age spectrum – as our programmes form a pipeline from 0 to 9 years of age.
