Project Read and
Nal’ibali

We implement the Ready, Steady, Read & Write programme (Wordworks) with 60 – 100 Grade 1 and 2 learners at 2 nonfee paying primary schools, in order to support their language and literacy development. This is followed up by running Nal’ibali reading clubs for Grade 3 learners at the same schools, in order to foster reading for meaning.

Classroom Libraries

This is a flagship project through which we have successfully equipped 40 Foundation Phase classrooms with classroom libraries that provide ready access to books and opportunities for group reading, individual reading and extended reading – all essential parts of the whole language experience that supports reading for meaning.

Aftercare & Enrichment
(ACE) programme

We provide a comprehensive aftercare programme to 20 vulnerable children on-site at
the Centre, through a nutritious meal and individual support for literacy and numeracy
development, as well as life skills and psycho-social support.

Provision of books to
homes

Our “20 books in 200 homes in 2020” campaign has formed the basis of our project which aims to provide a “tipping point” and change the culture of reading in homes. We believe that ready access to books is an essential element of supporting children’s literacy development, and of fostering nurturing relationships between parents and children.
