Early Childhood Development

Multilingual Little Red Dragon Preschool (LRD)

At Lebone, the Little Red Dragon Preschool provides a multi-lingual pre-Grade R classroom in which 24 children are taught in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa in equal measure. The Little Red Dragon is ahead of the curve in this innovation, having amalgamated our Grade 00 and Grade R classes into one multilingual pre-Grade R class in 2015, following the Department of Education’s instruction that all Grade R classes should be affiliated to a primary school.

Using an holistic approach to teaching and learning, emphasising the connectedness of body, mind and spirit, we pay attention to the child’s true being, as well as the cognitive aspects of their learning and development. With ‘learning through play’ as an important principle for us, we aim to empower children to become creative, engaged and life-long learners.

The annual Christmas Carol Concert is a unique experience for everyone, as the learners sing Christmas carols and recite Bible verses in three different languages!

Multilingual Storytelling Sessions (off-site)

This is one of our most exciting projects, in which we train unemployed young people from the community to become storytellers.  Some have been motivated to continue their studies while one has stayed on to assist with the new multilingual recruits and training. Storytelling sessions are held at two different community sites, complete with costumes and dramatic effect!  Children are given take-home books to encourage reading for pleasure in the home environment.

STELLAR (Strengthening Teaching of Early Language and Literacy in Grade R)

This ECD training programme provided for eight local 8 Grade R teachers to participate in this programme developed by Wordworks. Training sessions were held monthly from April to November, and each teacher received 8 story packs with resources, with 160 learners benefiting from the training and resource packs.
