The Lebone Centre is a Grahamstown/Makhanda NGO focusing on literacy development, Early Childhood Development (ECD) and the support of vulnerable children in the surrounding community.
Started in 2005 as part of the growing community engagement efforts of Kingswood College, the Centre was intended to serve the dual purpose of addressing the needs of vulnerable children in the immediate community, as well as offering a space where Kingswood staff and pupils could express the Methodist philosophy of ‘service’. Under the auspices of the Integrated Community Development Programme (ICDP) Trust, the Lebone Centre was acquired – a house adjacent to the Kingswood campus – and before long, the project took on a life of its own.
The Lebone Centre has become an active hub consisting of the Little Red Dragon Pre-school, the ACE after-care programme for vulnerable children, and the Lebone Literacy Programme. The Centre has become a recognisable face in the arena of literacy development, ECD, and the support of vulnerable children.
